Breast Reduction
Large breasts are heavy, and can affect posture and cause back and neck pain. They may also be responsible for limiting sporting and recreational activities, and clothing choices. A breast reduction provides an opportunity for increased comfort and enhanced appearance.
What does the operation involve?
Breast reduction is an operation to reduce the size of the breasts and lift the breats to a higher position on the chest wall.
During pre-operative consultation, Dr McManamny will careful plan the best technique for you: the amount of breast tissue to be removed, where the incisions (surgical cuts) are to be placed, and whether the use of liposuction to remove excess fullness in the axxillary region (the area just beneath the armpit) is also an option.
The operation is usually performed under a general anesthetic although occasionally, sedation and local anesthetic may be considered. Sutures are used to close the incisions, and tape is applied over the suture line.
Is a hospital stay necessary?
Dr McManamny recommends an overnight stay in hospital to give you the optimal surgical result. In some instances day surgery may be an option, but will require a return to Dr McManamny's surgery the following day for dressing changes.
Recovery
A support bra is fitted on the day after surgery, and is worn for two to three weeks after the operation. A return to work is usually possible after a week to ten days, however strenuous exercise is best avoided for several weeks.
