Rhinoplasty

A disproportionate nose can have a negative impact on one’s self-esteem. As the focal point of the face, the nose plays a key role in creating an attractive, balanced appearance. Men and women with an unsatisfactory nasal appearance can benefit from nose reshaping surgery, also known as rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty can correct structural or functional abnormalities of the nose for a natural and enhanced facial appearance.

Who Can Benefit?

Natural Deformities

Patients who are born with natural nasal deformities often face ridicule about their appearance at a young age. A large nasal appearance and wide nasal humps are common natural defects that rhinoplasty can address. Natural nasal deformities affect children and teens as well as adults, and rhinoplasty can be performed on patients who have fully developed noses. This usually occurs for girls around 15 years of age and boys by 16 years of age.

Deformities Due to Trauma

Deformities due to trauma are often the result of sports injuries. However, other accidents can also cause prominent nasal humps to form. In other cases, trauma causes the nose to appear crooked or misshapen. Some patients choose to correct their nasal appearance immediately following the injury, but it can also be performed years after the fact.

Breathing Abnormalities

undefined

A deviated septum is a common nasal abnormality that creates difficulties breathing. A deviated septum occurs when the cartilage separating the nasal passages becomes crooked and blocks airflow through one or both pathways. A deviated septum can occur naturally or as a result of trauma to the nose. Patients with deviated septums have trouble breathing and often suffer from sleep apnea or chronic snoring.

What Do You Desire?

Decreased Nasal Size

An enlarged nose or a drooping nasal tip can often cause an unbalanced facial appearance. For some people, a cumbersome nose can lead to the appearance of a weak or receding chin. Cartilage can be removed from the nose to create a more proportionate nose.

Addressing Your Concerns

Recovery

You will experience bruising and swelling of the nose for several weeks after surgery. Splints will be used to support the nose during healing and to help reduce excess swelling. You will need to rest with your head elevated for at least one week following your surgery. Most patients can return to work within two weeks of their procedure. For at least four weeks following your procedure, you shouldn’t wear any glasses and will need to limit your strenuous physical activities. Most major swelling will have subsided after six weeks; however, your nose may still feel tender. You may wear eyeglasses at this time with special support gauze.

Scars

Dr McManamny’s open technique will result in a fine scar at the base of the nose. In most cases, the scar is easily concealed with makeup and is likely to fade over time. In some cases, a closed technique may be used to prevent any visible scarring. The best technique for you will be decided after an extensive consultation with Dr McManamny.

Cost

The cost of your rhinoplasty will depend on the extent of correction required to achieve your desired results. Surgical, hospital, and anaesthesia fees all factor into the cost of your rhinoplasty procedure. Dr McManamny will provide you with detailed pricing following your consultation.

Pain

Rhinoplasty is performed with the patient under general anaesthesia for a safe and painless procedure. While patients will likely experience some discomfort during their recovery, it can be controlled using oral pain medication.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty

Why is there a minimum age requirement to undergo rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty should only be performed on patients with fully developed nasal structures. Patients with still-growing nasal structures may find that their results change as their nasal structures continue to expand.

What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?

An open rhinoplasty gives your surgeon greater control over the likely result, with a small incision at the base of the nostrils that may result in mild visible scarring. A closed rhinoplasty places all incisions inside the nasal passages.

Will my results be permanent?

Yes; rhinoplasty will provide life-long correction to the appearance of your nose.

What other procedures can enhance my facial appearance?

Patients who are considering rhinoplasty may also benefit from a facelift, neck lift, or eyelid lift to provide overall facial rejuvenation.

Will rhinoplasty be covered by my insurance?

In some instances of medical necessity, such as correcting a deviated septum, rhinoplasty may be covered by insurance. Contact your insurance provider to see what coverage they provide.
